Kilowatt Ours Interviews
Devra Wang - Director, California Energy Program at the Natural Resources Defense Council
Devra Wang is a scientist with NRDC's energy program. Based in the San Francisco office, she works on promoting energy efficiency and renewable energy resources through research and advocacy in local, state and regional forums. Prior to joining NRDC in 2002, Devra worked on energy policy at the California Energy Commission during the 2001 energy crisis, and conducted research on renewable energy and long-term power contracts at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. She holds a master's degree in energy and resources and a bachelor's in engineering, both from the University of California at Berkeley.
Devra Wang - Part One
- We know how to do energy efficiency better than anyone.
- California is among the most energy efficient state in the country but we have huge amounts of efficiency that can be saved yet.
- Energy efficiency helped save the day because we had 30 years of experience in it and it was easy for us to upgrade our efforts.
- Energy efficiency is the cheapest source of energy, it is the cleanest, and it is the fastest to employ. Plus it costs about half the cost of a new kilowatt.
- If we focus on energy efficiency as the first choice we can avoid building new power plants.
Devra Wang - Part Two
- We have shown that we can cut our pollution, be more energy efficient and grow our economy at the same time.
- Because we are more energy efficient we will keep our money in our economy rather than buying energy that we don't need.
- Many states have banded together to get their energy act together. Other states tend to follow California.
