Kilowatt Ours ‘Youth Initiative’ is an award-winning program with a three-year track record training students to become energy conservation leaders in their homes, schools, and communities. The program provides standards-based curriculum materials and resources, teacher training workshops, and a peer education program.

The peer education component prepares local university students to be energy leaders and serve as role models by presenting the program to high school and middle, and elementary school classes. The curriculum, presentations, and workshops connect directly to the film, Kilowatt Ours: A Plan to Re-Energize America.

Program successes include the following: 

  • Recipient of the 2008 Governor’s Environmental Stewardship Award for Excellence in Environmental Education and Outreach from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation

  • Program presented directly to 7,500 students in over 50 schools in Tennessee

  • 1,800 students trained to conduct home energy assessments

  • Over 2,200 copies of the curriculum disseminated nationwide

  • An online forum where you can share ideas and success stories with other teachers & students who are using this program.

The Youth Initiative program is widely used in Nashville, TN public and private schools. Kilowatt Ours is working in partnership with organizations and agencies across Tennessee to offer the program statewide. The curriculum has been downloaded by educators nationwide and we are looking to expand the scope of this program nationally.
